Can you be both creative and clean/organized? This is the BIG question! I have read, in some psychology journal years ago, that you can't be both. It is probably true but I know many people who struggle with this! I am one of them! I do love to have a spotless and organized home but there is too much to do and not enough time to do it all! Ugh! I get sidetracked like the butterfly that I am and jump from one thing to the next.
Having just finished the third year in a row of online/homeschooling with my daughter (and living out of a suitcase during this time while we travel weekly for a fun hobby she is involved with) I gave myself some time off. No I didn't drop it all! I still doing endless laundry and clean the floors, kitchen, and bathrooms <almost> daily. Take a peek at what has piled up at my house (since I took the Summer off from really cleaning)!
The very top picture is my desk in the kitchen. This is where mail and every flyer, school paper, newsletter, etc. goes. I used to go through it every Sunday and take care of any response or file it away. Need to do that again. Then you see a picture of the chair next to my computer desk in the family room. Yes these are files and school things that need to be returned from last school year! Did I mention the boxes? Well when you see the picture of many boxes stacked in my dining room you will know what those are for. I really need to return the old school items!
Then you see a picture of my pictures. Yes I have thousands of pictures that I have taken in my life. I decided last Spring that I would put them in my dining room until I did something with them. My kids went crazy over them all! Well they are still there. I really need to get this room cleaned out now that the Fall holidays are already here. Yesterday I tried but got sidetracked in looking at old pics. Fun but not helpful. It was a rainy day and we almost never get those here in the desert! You also see a picture of my sewing table, which is located in the dining room too. Yes many years ago my daughters wanted their own rooms so my sewing/creative room is now in a storage unit.
Then there are the cords that have piled up under the table in the dining room. Poor dining room. It is a beautiful room too. We obviously haven't used it since maybe Valentines day! Then there is the pile of clothes that has accumulated on the bench at the bottom of my bed. I have kept my suitcase under it for the past 3 years since I have been living out of it. I have really learned how to be prepared and to leave town at a moments notice and not forget anything!! Last week, when my husband was out of town I started going through my closet and this pile, but never quite finished this task. He is gone again this week so I might just take care of it this time.
Hmm... There are more piles, but it would scare you so I won't show you any more! I do have beautiful spots in my house where one can sit and you would wonder what I was talking about with messes.
I would rather be out having fun than at home cleaning. My kids think I'm obsessed with cleaning when I want to clean the kitchen after dinner and vacuum once a week! (when they were little and I wasn't busy I would vacuum every day) I am busy doing everything for everyone and loving every minute of it! I realize that there is also a difference between being clean and being organized. I would love to have all three coincide happily in my home all the time! Don't call the producers of "Hoarders" just yet (like my husband joked to me about)! There is hope!
So I guess you can be super creative and super clean/organized all the time, as long as you do have someone else to do some of it for you (or you don't get as much else accomplished and created along the way)! What do you think?
Yes I am having technical difficulties! Ugh! How do I get the pictures in my blog to insert where I want them or move them once its done? Nothing will work. I tried all last week! Oh well. Sorry for the pics in random spots!!
ReplyDeleteHA HA HA. I had to laugh out first at seeing those pics. This is soooo you, being so open about it.
ReplyDeleteWendy, you are too much of a butterfly and too creative to get all the cleaning done the way you would want it to be done. So, get some help with cleaning (mopping floors, vacuumcleaning etc.) but also get focused!!! Even butterflies have to watch were they are flying. Start with 1 thing at a time (from all the chores still waiting to be done)....make a schedule to to at least 1 thing extra in the week...and another tip: shut down your pc and your BB!!! No more talking/chatting/blogging untill you finished that extra one thing.
You wanna be good in all at once, be creative, be a good wife, a good mum, connect with all your friends. Dear Wendy, you only have 24 hours in a day and even you need some rest.....so focus...what is more important to you: your creativity or your cleaning, get some help (maybe your kids?? or a pro).
I'm convinced that you can be both creative and organised but sometimes it's just too much at the same time so then it's up to making choices. What means more to us, what makes us feel better, a clean house or the satisfaction/joy of another finished creation. We all need to ask that question and the answer is different for all of us. Do you still want it all? Then arrange help, either from people in your house or hire a pro to do the cleaning.
Loved to watch these pics. These are so you!! Is anyone bothered with all of this besides you??
And if they are bothered, get them to help you. You do have 6 great helping hands around. Certainly with these schoolitems, they could help out??
So next time, show us the same pics where we then hope to see....nothing piled up!
Thanks for sharing your worries:). This will be familiar to many (working) mum with a bunch of kids around.
I lack your creativity. That is a loss on the one hand but can be easy sometimes too :) No piles around. Besides my house is to small anyway to build piles. It's either us or the piles. So I have to be creative :) to not get anyting piled up. Aha, some creativity after all!!
First of all, that was a great comment above!
ReplyDeleteIt's true that we all have this problem to one degree or another. Only you can decide how much it bothers you/other family members and what needs to be done. It sounds like you've reached a level where it's really bothering you, so perhaps it's time to jump in - including help from your kids. I know you will want to do things your own way, but they can at least do tasks like help you pack old clothes to donate & take them to Goodwill for you.... return the school things, etc.
It's really hard not to be distracted. Some of us get distracted more easily than others! I have a few crucial "rules" that I've had to impose upon myself after years of struggling with certain things I knew I needed to do but never would. I had to get honest with myself. My biggest example of this, is that I am *not allowed* to even open up my computer or work on any projects until I read my scriptures. It's the only way they will ever be read. I tried for years and failed miserably, but knew it was something I needed (and wanted) to do. I had to get real.
My day doesn't seem right unless 1) my bed is made, 2) teeth brushed, mascara on, an attempt at a good hair day, 3) scriptures are read and I say a prayer. Then I feel like I've already started accomplishing good things and I am free to start whatever else needs to be done/whatever it is I want to do. That's when I usually do things like start laundry, pick up the kitchen, make any calls that need to be made, trim my roses..... and then *finally* open my computer and get going w/ my e-mail, my blog, my photos, etc - or a project I want to do. It seems like when I can use that order of things and I feel good about everything being done or in it's place, or started....... then I am not only more creative but I *enjoy* things more without burdens hanging over my head. Like a photo shoot, or redoing my front porch, or a blog post, or a craft I've been wanting to do, or a project like organizing my paints & brushes & canvases, or going out to lunch with a friend...... the list, as you know, is endless! :)
Does that make any sense? My day feels off kilter any other way. And if the computer is opened before anything else, I can tell you right now that *nothing* else will get done the entire day. I can get a LOT done on my computer, but it's also a weakness and a distraction - so it has to be somewhat of a reward system for me to open when I'm *allowed* to!!!
I hope this helps??? Let me know what you think!!! XOXOXOXO
Well thank you to my two very wise friends! I love that each of you wrote a whole book on the subject! Too cute!
ReplyDelete@Monique- You are quite the creative one! You are so creative in technology and the legal world, my international friend, and now creative in your thoughts on my piles! I love it! Interesting to me how we have never met in person (except for skype) and you know my ways. Weird.
@Megan- Your schedule is very inspiring. It's wonderful! What a great example to live by! Wow! That is great! My piles make me laugh because they come and go. It is a constant in my life. I didn't reach a level where they bother me. Just something I wonder about sometimes. That's it! Things did get a bit worse around here over the past three years when I was spending half of the week out of town and doing a weeks worth of living while here in town! Whew! It was busy but fun and I loved it!
Yes girls I do get distracted easily and it's a good thing that I don't sleep much or I would really be in trouble! I get so much done it is crazy sometimes. I just don't always get everything done that I would like to. I think that to do all that I need and want to do I would need 3 of me as my assistants! Seriously!! Family, friends and helping others comes first and I would rather do that than have a super organized/clean house any day!
When I was pregnant with my youngest Claire (16 yrs. ago) I had 4 miscarriages before her and had a severe pregnancy at home hooked up to IV's, etc., so I did have a cleaning lady. She is a dear friend and her team cleaned my house for many years. My husband is a perfectionist and they came 2 and 3 times a week. When my oldest became a teenager I wanted them to know how much work went into keeping a house clean so I got rid of the ladies. I learned many good tips from her over the years too!
My children were so used to having everything done all the time. Funny because now my children think I am obsessed with cleaning when my house is far from clean! They say this because I spend time and actually had to clean things whereas before I didn't need to as much. I also mowed and took care of my huge yard and gardens myself until this Summer! I could hire someone working 8 hours a day on just that around here.
So things are fine. These piles are things that only I can take care of too. I just needed a great Summer off and I finding that it is taking a bit longer to go through everything that got piled up.
PS- My blogging and computer time is mainly at night when all are sleeping or watching TV. I am on the computer during the day from my blackberry while I wait in traffic or store lines or at appointments or waiting for school pick up, etc!!
I love both of your ideas and thoughts. Some great things to think about. You are both great friends to me! Funny that now I have written a book :)
Wendy, I am going to love following your blog! I see how creative you are...LOVE your decorating! My favorite pic is the one of all the cords! I think we all feel a bit buried at times...but make time for the blog so I can read about it!
ReplyDeleteBTW..I, too, am having problems posting pics on blogspot. I have to refresh before each pic and it is irritating. I also don't like that we can't really move the pics around much.
@Jill- I am so happy to meet you and am truly honored that you would think my little blog is interesting, with all of your experience. I already feel a connection to you!
ReplyDelete@Shigeteru- Thank you for finding me. I am going to check out yours now. Thanks.
Sidenote to my post -- So I am getting ready for Halloween around here and get things together and tomorrow is the day I am shipping back school stuff and I get a call and have to go to Los Angeles for the day. Story of my life! Fun but no time to do things. Oh well there is always the next day! Good thing about the cords in that pile is that when I needed some for Halloween stuff they were easy to find! Lol!
Hi beautiful Wendy. Looking at your photos reminded me of my son's room :) If ever I get a chance to visit the US I will go to your place and be your maid but you have to supply me a nice looking black and white maid dress with cute laces, hahaha!
ReplyDeleteI'll clean your house, do your laundry , cook dinner and might even fix your car... hahaha!
Kidding aside, I'm not that much organized too but what we do is that whenever we pick-up something (book, magazine, utensils, etc.) we always try to put them back where we got them. If all are back where they all should be, then you don't really have to do your cleaning everyday. This is what I always say to my son but it seems that I may need to record it on tape and play it to him every morning. Don't let me send you a copy of the tape OK... hahaha!
Thanks Ronnel! You made me laugh! Funny! How soon can you be over?
ReplyDeleteWendy,
ReplyDeleteI'll start paddling my rubber boat and will bring my rubber ducky along :)
PS: I visited Wendys Hat on FB... very nice! Love your photos!
