Christmas Cards {Traditions}
Busy busy busy here in WeNdYs WiNtEr WoNdErLaNd!
Already day 6 and so much going on! Today was my daughters 16th birthday and this had us out celebrating and taking pictures and this also had me thinking about Christmas cards! Although for the past few years I have not sent a card out {due to lack of time and teens not wanting to pose} I love giving and receiving these little bits of joy from my friends and family!
The tradition of the Christmas card seems to have originated in England in 1843 by Sir Henry Cole {founder of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London}. He had so many greeting cards to send out that he had no way to do it all by hand so he commissioned John Calcott Horsley to paint a card showing the feeding and caring of poor children. He had wanted to make all of his friends aware of the great need to clothe and feed to poor. Well the picture had a family embracing each other and sipping wine which others thought "fostered the moral corruption of children". Didn't work out the way he had planned and the next year he didn't send any cards out! His tradition did start and people have carried it on since then.
There are many ways to send out a holiday note to your friends! There is always the boxed Christmas card that is nice to receive and even better if it has a photo enclosed with it! Many boxed sets have a window for your own picture. Scrapbook or paper stores have a million different ideas for making your own original card with or without a photo. Today you can send a card electronically! You can send a Christmas letter wrapping up the highlights of your year. I have a few friends that do that and it is fun to read! There are also many types of photo sites that let you do fabulous things with your own pictures and they print them for you!
Whatever you decide to do remember it's the thought that counts. Not how perfect the card is! When my children were young there weren't as many options as today when it came to types of cards to send out for Christmas. So many of my cards were traditional and then inside I would glue a picture inside and hand write a note {eventually I went to photocopying a cute message on colored paper and cutting it with scalloped scissors and gluing it to the other side of the card}.
I was also busy with all 3 of my children having birthdays 2 weeks apart during November and December! Do it simple but do something was my motto! This picture is from the year Claire was born and I mixed a Christmas card with birth announcement that year!
These two cards I sent out after Christmas for New Years because we were busy and out of town! Hey at least I sent them! Friends and family don't really care!
My favorite was a photo we took that September while on vacation and had made into a card!
I try to think of something catchy to go with the photo! And I always include of picture of my children for friends and family to see how they've grown. This is hard at my house because we don't do photos! {Only crazy mother does!} Oh well, so much for dreaming! We will never have that perfect card but that is us, we are not perfect! I would rather have everyone see us in real life anyways! So what do you have to lose?
The past few months have had our lives crazier and busier than ever but I just might be sending a card out this year! What is your favorite type of card to receive? What is your favorite card that you have sent out to others for the holidays?
I LOVED seeing your christmas cards of the past decade. I know your struggle about how and when to find time to send out cards. Every year I promise myself to start early and to make an effort to make that special cards...but usually I fail. After the business of Sinterklaas I need a short break to regain energy for Christmas and by that time.....it's past the time to make work of handmade cards...they already have to be send out.
ReplyDeleteSome years I managed to make a photocard. The thing is I never kept one for ourselves, so I can't even show them later on. STUPID, I know!! Will have to change that!. I do send out cards EVERY year and cards to my loved ones abroad are already on its way!!!!
Since I don't find the time I usually get boxed cards/premade cards with a nice picture of christmas/santa/etc.
How fun to see your kids grow up in the pics...and you look great on the only one I can really see you on. Maybe you should concentrate on a beautiful card of you and mr. C instead of chasing the kids with your camera. At least mr. C won't run from you. How about one of the 2 of you in front of one of the many decorations in Bellagio?
I've sent out many over the years and since I don't keep the ones I sent to myself I can't say what's my favorite. From the received ones I like the ones my friend Saskia sent me over the years. She also sent me photocards. Really nice to get those.
So then I should say that my favorites would be to get photocards, but since I don't give good example, I can't expect others to send me some, can I. Maybe I still find a nice spot to make that christmas family shot...so...you just wait and see.
How fun what a great tradition. I'm really unsure what to do for our Christmas cards...so far all I have is procrastination.
ReplyDeleteJust do it Tanya! This post has really got me motivated! This morning I have only spent about 30 minutes and checked out www.tinyprints.com for their easy to use card system but you have to order and they ship so I then went to www.target.com and their photo cards are cute , easy and you can pick them up same day!!! I used pics from this past month and am making a super cute card for anywhere from $5 to $7 for a set of 10 with envelopes and it has multiple pictures and is printed on photo paper!
ReplyDeleteMonique! Thanks. Too bad you didn't save any as I would have loved to see them. Start something new this year. You are so super technical that it will be easy for you to do!
ReplyDelete*LOVED* seeing your past cards, and also loved your enthusiasm to get cards sent out! I am usually good to send them and have done all kinds over the years. But when our list topped 200 I decided I needed to scale back because it needed to be an enjoyable activity and not a burden. I cut the list in half - took out all the "obligatory" people - and it has been fun again. I listen to Christmas music and drink hot cocoa as I address them :) Which reminds me, I would love your address so I can send YOU a card!
ReplyDeleteThanks too Megan! I know how big the list gets and how busy we all get. I'm back this year. I will send you my address only if you send me yours! Let the Christmas music fill the air!
ReplyDeleteI gave up on the Christmas picture card a few years ago, too, Wendy. But I do love receiving them. I really enjoyed seeing your cards through the years. The kids are adorable!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jill! I "Just did It!" this year and am picking up my online ordered picture cards tomorrow! I'm back!!!
