Christmas Ornaments {Tutorial}

Day 14 here in WeNdYs WiNtEr WoNdErLaNd!

I had to go to a local craft store this weekend to get supplies to help my daughter make her "cell" for Biology and felt like the only one there not buying for Christmas!  Well you know me and my "butterfly thoughts" racing through my head, as I try to put my blinders on!  SALE - oh no I am really distracted now!  So I purchased these cute "fillable" glass ornaments and here is what I came up with!

The first one I simply filled with cream and white tiny buttons that I had laying around in my collection.  I topped the ornament with a tiny tassel that I found laying around.  (I save tassels and ribbons from packages and they really seem to come in handy for times such as this!)  You could use any color button, or a mixture of colors to fill these with.

Since I was working in the kitchen today my thoughts are surrounded by candy and gingerbread men, since this is the theme of the tree I have in there!  OK  here is a thought!  I run to the cupboard and find many different colored sprinkles for cookies.  I filled this ornament with red and green holly berry and leaves sprinkles!  Hung it with a simple red ribbon and there I had another idea to fill these ornaments with.  You could use any color sprinkles to go with the color theme of your tree.

Last I share with you my favorite little "fillable" ornament idea {which was the first one I thought of while in the store} and my favorite!  So I saw these empty glass balls and thought to my self "What could I put in these wonderful little goodies that are just waiting to be filled"?  I walked around the store {while assisting my daughter with finding her treasures for the Biology "cell"} looking at every possible thing that I could use to stuff into that glass ball.  Then it hit me when I saw this creamy, thick, and chunky yarn!  Yes!

For these medium size balls I cut a 3 foot length and started swirling it in!  My thought as I started and watched it wind its way around, was the same as I had imagined when I first spied this wonderful plump yarn!  It looked like piped frosting!  This would be a perfect addition to my candy and gingerbread man tree, for every gingerbread themed tree needs a little frosting!

So I am a huge bow person and originally I tied the yarn into a big bow and topped the ornament with this and it was cute enough.  But...then...I had a frosting vision!

I took off the bow and twisted the yarn around the ornament hook so it appears that the frosting is spilling out of the ball and can't be contained.  Kind of like when you're right in the middle of frosting your gingerbread men and it gets everywhere!

So there you have it!  Ornament inspiration while shopping for a Biology project!  Oh I almost for got to tell you the best part and that's the price.  I got a package of six medium glass balls and eight small glass balls for one dollar $1 each package.  Yes I bought a few for some future ideas I have.

I know now that there are a million different things you can use to fill these with so you only have your imagination to stop you!  My "butterfly thoughts" are racing again.  Sand, crushed up shells, flower petals, ribbons, lace, beads, and on and on...  What will you fill yours with?

So now to answer your question about whether or not we made it out of the store with what she needed for her "cell" for Biology?  Of course we did and she did a fabulous job!  I snapped a quick pic but didn't get a top view where you see all the detail.  She is also busy working on her dream land for French class this week!  Very creative and detailed map!  {Don't these teachers know it's December and we have better things to do?!}

Hold on to your "Hats" everyone!  Special{ADDITION}!

 Ok so I know I am a bit Crazy!  So when I go in to clean up the mess from braiding and wiring my daughters hair this morning for Crazy Hair Day at school, it hits me.  Wire and buttons equal ornament hanger love.  I have been putting up my dining room tree with the great ornate ornament hangers and saw a blog last night where she made her own too and put a bead on it So...

  I made a cute little button adorned ornament hanger!  Now my favorite ornament!!  Just had to share!

Oh and here's how the CRAZY HAIR turned out!
People have been taking pics of her all day at school!  She's famous there now!  Gotta go now and pick her up!

  1. It almost looks like there is no way those buttons fit in that hole! Very cute. It would be fun to just fill those up with all kinds of stuff around the house...

  2. Thanks Cheryl. Once you get thinking of things to fill them with you can't stop! I wish the opening could be made larger somehow and then could shrink up again!

  3. Okay i have a lot to say about those ornaments but now I can't get my mind off that cell! Holy Moly, I hope they display that so the whole school can see! Amazing job. OK back to the ornaments (apparantly I have butterfly thoughts too), I LOVE what you did! I never would have thought of the yarn, genius! But the buttons and sprinkles are just as fun. Thanks for linking up!

  4. Thanks Emily! I thought she did a great job too. She said that during the Biology test the teacher kept going over to look at it! I'm glad to know i'm not the only one that gets side tracked with my thoughts! Unfortunately overload sometimes for me! And thanks for hosting that Christmas linky party with the girls at WhipperBerry. I saw some really cute ideas and met some really great people! I am happy that you had a little spot for my ornaments there.

  6. Funny Roz! Thank you. Haha! I just try to do what I can {which is kind of a hodge podge of everything without enough time to really focus on something great!} Yes and these teachers with all of their grand plans just get in the way of my December fun! All these projects and now {after my midnight run for the right wire} hours to do the "Crazy hair" this morning. Whew I guess I am crazy!! Thanks for following me Roz and thanks to all of you other great folks!

  7. Loved your balls, so simple so why can't I come up with this idea? I guess that's what they call creativity. Due to being busy for work and the situation with my parents, my head has been full with lots a things but for creativity.
    Loved the rope ball the best.

  8. Thanks Monique! Your kind comments mean a lot to me. I know how busy you are and appreciate it. Focus on your family first, that is more important than creativity or my silly little blog!

  12. Why thank you Ms. Sassy Scrapin'!! In the tutorial you see the pic where I am putting the yarn in...simply take the top off and insert buttons! Luckily I have a HUGE collection of buttons so it was easy for me to find small ones that would fit in in the top! Hop on over to my house and I will help you make one!
