Purple Flowering Texas Sage

Welcome to the first week of Fall.  Here in the desert that means the second growing season of the year.  Today, while driving around town, I couldn't help but notice beautiful bursts of color in varying shades lavender and purple.  Then, while on my walk in the trails near my home, I saw these purple beauties everywhere!

Texas Sage Shrubs in Shaped Hedges

This beautiful shrub is known as a Texas Ranger or Texas Sage and come in different varieties ranging in color from a very pale lavender to a bright purple and everywhere in between.  Besides being colorful they do attract butterflies!  They are very hardy plants that survive the HOT Summer sun and even flower in it.  Texas Sage require very little water but will bloom again soon after a big Summer rainstorm.  Unless they are kept trimmed they can grow from 6 to 8 feet, so plan your space accordingly.  They are especially beautiful around Las Vegas during both Spring and Fall when they are flowering in full bloom, but have nice tiny green leaves otherwise.  I've seen Texas Sage around for years and LOVE seeing them both out in wilderness areas and in landscapes along city streets.   I love flowers and even though my yard is not a typical desert landscape, I think this year I am going to find a spot to plant one of these pretty Texas Sage.  Here in Las Vegas our Fall isn't the typical orange and red leaves but it can be just as beautiful.  What type of Fall color do you have in your part of the world?
