How to Plant an Herb Garden

Here in my desert, NOW is the perfect time to get your garden going, if you didn't already get an early start!
Usually once March hits here there isn't much chance of a freeze.
Check your growing time zone to find out when it's best for you to plant.
Planting now also gets things well rooted before the real HEAT hits.

I like to keep a Potted Herb Garden just outside my kitchen door.
I have a dozen pots that I fill with tasty treats!
Pots next to my house actually stay warm enough in the Winter for most things to survive.
I also plant herbs in flower beds both in the front yard and in the back yard.
Herbs keep many of the pests away and makes everything smell great!
Whenever I am outside trimming or step on a few leaves, I suddenly find myself craving Italian food!

Fresh Basil is a MUST in my gardens!  It usually doesn't last a cold Winter and must be replanted.
This year besides my favorite Sweet Basil, I also planted Cinnamon Basil and Spicy Basil for a change!
Some of my favorite herbs that I always keep, both potted and in the ground, are:
Basil, Sweet Marjoram, Cilantro, Chives, Garlic Chives, Parsley, Thyme, Oregano, Rosemary, Sage, Mint,
and of course my famous

When planting Mint you will want to plant them in pots only because they become an invasive weed that is hard to control.
I have some in my front yard flower bed that was there when I moved here and it's still thriving and spreading some 15 years later,
with tons of pruning!
For some fun, besides the regular Mint, try the Chocolate Mint because it smells like licorice!

Then there is my always favorite and oh so soft to touch Lambs Ear, just for fun!

Besides my fun Kitchen Garden, where I grown small vegetables and more herbs,
I also plant a few pots with many different varieties of lettuces.
My pots of lettuce always do really well and are a perfect addition to any sandwich!

While you are potting your herbs, don't forget to plant at least one or two cherry tomatoes because they do fabulous in pots!
My potted ones sometimes do better than the ones I grow in the ground!

TIPS for Potting Plants~
1.  Place a 4 or 5 medium size rocks on the bottom of your pot {before dirt} for drainage.
2.  Use Miracle Grow Potting Soil for great results and no more feeding necessary!
3.  Attach dripper sprinkler/tubes to each pot for easy watering when gone!

Growing a Kitchen and Herb Garden can be fun and is easy to do!
You can even plant a small potted one in a sunny windowsill, or on a balcony, if you are in an apartment!
AND
Growing your own herbs can save you money!
You will reap the benefits ALL Summer long, and in some cases year-round!
Mine gets used every time we cook!

So tell me...
What's in your Garden?

If your answer is NOTHING then now is the perfect time to change that!

  3. I love your herb garden! I need to start, too. However, growing basil and me don't mix. They always end up dying on me. Either soil is too wet or too dry. I can never get it perfect. Any notion why basil is being so temperamental with me? I can grow everything else.

    1. Thanks! That's why basil does better in pots I've found! It wants water every day but just enough to halfway dry the dirt out. My pots get only morning sun and they are happy with that here in the desert. Try it again in pots with miracle grow potting soil. Have fun! I bet the rest of your garden looks great!

  9. I just recently planted: Sweet Basil, Cilantro, Parsley, Dill, chives, Green Onions, Lettuce and Cucumbers.
I really have no idea what I am doing. Walgreens had seeds on sale for 20 cents each. I figured if I messed it up I'm only losing $2. :)
